When meeting someone in Jamaica it is common to give a handshake, make eye contact, and smile. After you have met a woman it is common for them to give a side cheek kiss starting on the right side.


Dining out
At restaurants people often serve themselves. Utensils in Jamaica are always used to eat, forks are held in the right hand knife in the left. Finish everything on your plate. If you are invited to eat at a person’s home wait to eat and sit until the hosts tells you to. Try everything that is made it is considered polite.

Music
Reggae music is very popular in Jamaica. In their beautiful symphonies they mainly sing about bringing love, joy, and positive influence to the world. Religion
The religion of Jamaica consists mainly of a new religious movement called Rastafarianism. It developed in Jamaica during the 1930s that came from their Ethiopian Emperor Ras Tafari Makonnen. Ras means “head,” “prince,” or “field marshal,” and tafari means “to be feared.” The practiioners are known as Rasta, Rastafari, or Rastafarians. The religion of Jamaica also consists of Christian and Protestant and Protestant religions.


Fashion
The Jamaican culture has a laid back African inspired style that incorporates bright colors made of natural fibers. Throughout Jamaica is popular throughout their culture to where their hair in dreadlocks that is braided with knitted hats known as a “tam” worn over them.
Women
Traditional clothing for women in Jamaica consists of long dresses or skirts, tops, and head scarfs that are made using calico fabrics. The calico they wear is a lightweight fabric that is hand made by local villagers locally in Jamaica.


Men
Traditional Jamaican clothing for men consists of short sleeved t shirts or collared shirts with bright graphics and trousers or long pants.
Cuisine
The Jamaican cuisine is quite diverse and mostly vegetarian. They do not eat pork and some are very strict not eating any meat or fish. They eat a lot of herbs, vegetables, and fruits.

Popular Dishes
Callaloo
Made from leaf greens such as amaranth, taro, kale or xanthosoma. Topped with other herbs of choice such as Rosemary.

Run Down
Also referred to as rundown, run dun, fling-me-far and fling mi for is a stew dish that consists of fish, yam, reduced coconut milk, tomato, onion and various seasonings.

Fried plantain
Made with vegetable oil and plantains from the area.

Dessert
Jamaican Patty
It’s a pastry that contains an egg yolk mixture, ground beef, turmeric, thyme, curry and various other spices inside a flaky shell.
